Don't fall for dummies: Gov auctioned off the Silk Road coins (proof)

There's a post getting lots of upvotes talking about how the government can't access the coins it seized from silk road. That's not true. The government had access to them and eventually auctioned them off.

Here's an article that covers one of the auctions - https://fortune.com/2017/10/02/bitcoin-sale-silk-road/

And for what it's worth, I used to work for one of the companies that participated in these auctions. The coins are very much in circulation.

Don't believe everything you see on the internet folks.

Edit: If you're going to add to the discussion or bring up counter points, for the love of god, cite a source.

I did more research and put it in this comment completely debunking the other post's claim that 600k BTC have been in the hands of the FBI since 2013, in a single wallet, but they can't access it.

Furthermore, I didn't create this post to fight with people, nitpick, or be rude. I just wanted people to know the facts and not buy into more misguided hopium. There's no rules about citing sources here, so gotta call out bs when you see it.

Edit 2: It doesn't say any where in the article that the 144k BTC sold in auction was from escrow accounts. The justice department presser linked in the article describes them as "144,336 Bitcoins that were recovered from Ross William Ulbricht’s laptop computer." Read the comment I linked to in edit 1 for more info.

submitted by /u/toast_is_square
[link] [comments]Kind Regards R
